Built up letters – also known as ‘channel letters’ - are bold, striking and packed with wow-factor, making them the ultimate choice for business signage.
There are many different options available to create a completely custom built up letter sign that pops with personality and suits your brand perfectly – from the size, colour and materials used, to the lighting and installation options.
At Sign Logic, we supply a full range of custom built up indoor and outdoor letters, including:
- Rimless built up letters – a sleek, modern and seamless finish, where the face material sits flush to the return of the letter or logo, giving the impression of a free floating letter face. Its borderless face means that it can be fully illuminated, and is ideal for small to medium sized letters. This style can be made from aluminium, acrylic or stainless steel. A popular style for highstreet retailers such as M&S, H&M and Sunglass Hut.
- Rim and return built up letters – this style is normally used for larger letters or logos where a 2-3cm border in the return material sits over the face of the letter or logo. As well as for aesthetic appeal, the border (‘rim’) ensures the face material doesn’t flex or move on large built up letters. Think Zara, Disney and Wagamama for this style of sign.
- Open channel built up letters – ideal for those looking for a retro feel for their signage. This faceless style leaves the inside of the built up letters open, so neon tubing or LED lightbulbs are exposed. Ideal for fairground style lighting (known as ‘cabochon lighting’). Leon and Byron Burger often use this style for their signs.
Custom 3D letters can either be mounted on fascia signs or a variety of surfaces, freestanding or suspended from the ceiling. As well as being fixed flush to a back tray or wall, they can also be stood off from the wall using locators to appear as if they are floating.
Built up metal letters and logos
Metal letters for signs can come in a variety of materials including:

They can be finished as satin, polished or brushed metal letters, or they can be powder coated in any standard RAL colour to match your brand. They can also be produced in virtually any size, so ideal if you’re looking for large metal letters.
Built up acrylic letters and logos
3D acrylic letters – also known as ‘built up Perspex letters’ – come in all different shapes, sizes and colours. They come in a range of finishes including gloss, frosted and fluorescent colours, as well as glass effects and matt finishes.
There are two basic components of a built up acrylic letter sign; the face letter and the sidewall. The face letter is cut to shape from a flat piece of acrylic using a CNC machine for precision. This is then applied to the acrylic sidewall leaving a completely clear join. The face and sidewalls can either be in the same colours for a seamless finish, or you can play around with contrasting colours – it’s completely up to you.
Acrylic letters can be used for exterior signage, as well as internal branding too.

Lighting options for built up letters and logos
There a number of lighting options available for built up illuminated letters and logos, including:
- Face lit letters – a translucent material is used for the face, leaving the entire face to illuminate in your brand’s colour.
- Halo lighting – LED illumination from behind each letter or logo to create a soft, halo glow. This style of lighting is also known as ‘backlit’.
- Cabochon lighting – LED lightbulbs are exposed in an open channel 3D letter or logo, resulting in a retro feel similar to the lighting style at a fairground.
